"From His signs is that He created for you from amongst yourselves spouses that you may dwell with them in tranquility and He made between you love and compassion. Truly in this (relationship) are signs for people who reflect." (Quran)
"The best of you are those who are best to their spouses"(((audio)))This is my first khutba in over three years of speaking at different locations on marriage. It may sound strange but I usually leave this topic for someone older, more experienced than me to talk about. I feel that Imams or marriage counselors are probably better equipped to talk about this subject, not me.
However, last two years and scores of domestic problems forced me to speak on marriage. I felt that I wasn't helping people by telling them to read Quran, join study sessions, perform community service, and
yet the central issue of marital relations was always ignored. For this reason I mentioned a few points on gaining taqwa and a partnership in marriage. A stable family is a crucial element in forming a successful society.
The Friday sermon of the Prophet (s) was about calling to Allah and dealing with communal issues. Marriage is a life partnership. A believer always makes use of this union to get closer to Allah and not be overburdened by it.
Just remember the words of
George Bernard Shaw:
"Marriage is an alliance entered into by a man who can't sleep with the window shut and a woman who can't sleep with the window opened."
