junk emails!

The number of junk email especially in Ramadan is on an all-time high. Two days ago, I received an email from a legitimate Islamic organization telling me about a program 500 miles from town. This is not the first email either and after receiving scores of pay $$ and get your iman ticket I decided to try something new - unsubscribe!

So I said istaghfirullah - May God forgive me for this and scrolled all the way down to the bottom of the email. Looking at the last sentence, I couldn't help but say takbir! I had a huge smile as I had found what could only be described as sakinah from spam. The statement read ...

"-- If you would like to unsubscribe from future XYZ e-mails please click here --"

So with a huge smile and huge takbir, I clicked on "click here". But before I could say al-hamdo lillah mission accomplished, following is what I received from the organization: "Assalaamu Alaykum

Thank you for emailing XYZ Islamic Istitution. We pray this message reaches you in the best of health and faith. You have received an auto reply because we want you to know that your email is important to us. We receive hundreds of emails, letters, faxes, and phone calls every day from supporters throughout the world and we try our hardest to respond to every correspondence as best as we can, and in a timely manner. Although, it is our hope to be able to accommodate all requests, it may take us some time to respond.

We sincerely apologize for any delays in responding back to your email.

One Ummah at Rutgers

Subject: The New Unified Rutgers Muslim Community

AsslamWalaykoom Warahmatullah,

We would like to officially announce, with great pleasure, that The Muslim Community at Rutgers University has once again become ONE unified organization. There are no longer two separate Muslim groups on campus anymore- but rather ONE unified body representing the Ummah as a whole.
In order for this unification to occur, certain things needed to have been changed for the sake of unity- specifically a new logo, and a new name. And so, ISRU & SALAM have combined to bring you the new....

"RU-MSA, the Muslim Student Association of Rutgers University

"

We ask Allah to bless this new organization and ask everyone to show their support and enthusiasm for this coming fall semester.

Khutba on Marriage

Marriage: Partners & Protectors

ISCJ - Jul. 25, 2008

"The best of you are those who are best to their family" (hadith)

I tried my best to be practical with this khutba and tried to tackle some of these difficult issues. I do not know why but it is my observation that when I don't hear any khutbas on this important topic and when I hear something related to this topic it is fluff - superficial talk about how great earlier generations were. There are many ayat and hadith about marriage but people do not talk about marriage in today's context. They always talk about things that happened 1400 years ago without relating it to our times. Furthermore, many young couples are going through a lot of stress and anxiety in their marriage and they simply do not have anybody to ask for advice. Again, this is one serious subject that most speakers will not discuss. I hope things will change for better.
